Americana World Community Center, in partnership with Family Health Centers, has been awarded a $500,000 grant from the James Graham Brown Foundation to support its $3.9 million Healthcare Excellence Initiative. This transformative capital improvement project will provide critical renovations to the Americana Community Center, dramatically enhancing healthcare and support services for Louisville's growing immigrant, refugee, and underserved populations.
The grant will fund renovations to three floors of the Americana's South Wing, including the addition of an elevator and other ADA-accessible features. These updates will fully integrate Family Health Centers-Americana into one facility, doubling the number of exam rooms and significantly expanding services, such as Refugee Health Assessments, Community Health Worker programing, behavioral health care, and primary care follow-ups.
“The James Graham Brown Foundation has been a steadfast supporter of Americana since 2002,” said Emilie Dyer, Executive Director of Americana Community Center.
“This grant helps us take a major step forward in addressing the needs of our community by expanding capacity and ensuring services are holistic and accessible to all.”
Currently, healthcare services are conducted from outdated modular units, which are no longer sufficient for the demand. Originally designed as a temporary space, 17 years later the services have entirely outgrown the modular buildings. By bringing all services into the main building, the project will provide a modern, safe and welcoming environment for clients and staff. The expanded space will also support women entrepreneurship programs and ethnic community groups, including the Fiberworks Program, Adelante Hispanic Achievers, and the Kentucky Haitian Community.
“The Foundation believes in the mission of the Americana Community Center and its partnership with Family Health Centers. It provides incredibly important resources to the community particularly those in underserved communities,” said Mason Rummel, president and CEO of The James Graham Brown Foundation. “The James Graham Brown Foundation believes in this work that is critical for Louisville’s refugee and immigrant populations to build strong and healthy families.”
Americana has already raised $2.6 million of the project's total cost; However, additional community support is needed to fully fund the initiative.
Construction is scheduled to begin in March 2025, with completion anticipated by April 2026.
